EUGENE, Ore.–This February, the Student Production Association of Lane Community College presented “Electra’s Oresteia” in the Ragozzino Performance Hall. The final performance of the run was also the kick off performance of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Region 7 conference hosted at the University of Oregon.
The Ragozzino Hall was packed with an enthusiastic crowd made up of theatre students and faculty from across the U.S. As a member of KCACTF, Lane Theatre was eligible for award nominations for student and professional work. A professional independent respondent discussed the show with students following the performance and awarded the following Certificates of Merit:
- Projection Design – James McConkey, LCC Theater Technical Director
- Costume Design – Lane Theatre Students Rachel Hannah Urner, Bri Orloski, Alex Collins; and Heather Kidd, LCC Theater Interim Costumer
- Playwright and Lyricist – Aaron Michael Smart, former SPA president
- Direction – Brian Haimbach, LCC Theatre Lead Faculty
In addition to these awards, actors Emma Weinkauff and Christopher Ridgley received nominations for the national Irene Ryan acting competition. Next year, these two students will be able to compete at the regional conference.
Twenty-two Lane Theatre students attended the KCACTF festival February 18-22 and participated in a week of workshops and networking with students and faculty from four-year schools.
At the festival, “Electra’s Oresteia” earned the distinction of “Best Spotlight Production” and former LCC student Emily Bolivar won the best lighting design in the region for her work on last year’s “Peter and the Starcatcher.” She is the runner up to the national award, a rare achievement for a student at a community college.
