EUGENE, Ore. – The Student Productions Association of Lane Community College presents “Electra’s Oresteia,” a brand new rock n’ roll musical adaptation of Aeschylus’ ancient Greek tragedy.
Performances are Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14, 15, 16, and 17 at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m.; all in the Ragozzino Performance Hall, Building 6, LCC main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene.
Audiences may remember “The Oresteia Project,” the first iteration of this new musical presented by SPA back in 2015. “Electra’s Oresteia” also tells the story of Agamemnon’s return from the Trojan war, but with a new book and lyrics. Now we follow Electra’s journey from forgotten princess to enlightened individual as she charts the turbulent waters of “murder, treason, matricide and lies.”
The show still features the fantastic score written by local theatre artist Cullen Vance. LCC Theatre students have been working with the director and Lead Theatre Faculty, Dr. Brian Haimbach, to develop the script, which now features a more polished story and two new songs. Haimbach says, “We are very proud of the show we presented in 2015, but we all felt we needed a stronger central character and themes. I think the book and lyrics are so very much stronger than they were the last time. I hope everyone who saw ‘The Oresteia Project’ will come back for ‘Electra’s Oresteia’ and see how the hard work has paid off.”
The production will once again feature a contemporary design and rock ‘n’ roll setting with ancient Greek accents giving audiences the experience of a rock concert that tells a classic story of the importance of keeping tabs on our leaders. The production is appropriate for audiences ten and up.
Audiences are asked to note that the show runs for one week only and will be presented as part of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival hosted by University of Oregon from Feb. 18-22.
Tickets are free and available at the door. Donations are accepted for production expenses and theatre studies scholarships.
