Panel discussion Feb. 13
EUGENE, Ore.–Lane Community College launches a new, ongoing series beginning Wednesday, February 13 that explores climate change as a social justice issue.
The series, “Climate Change and Social Justice: Exploring Community Response and Resiliency,” begins with a panel discussion titled “Climate Change 101” to provide information on the college and city of Eugene’s climate change planning efforts and opportunities for community action. The panel discussion will be offered at the following times on Feb. 13:
- 12 p.m., building 3 boardroom, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene
- 5:30 p.m., Mary Spilde Center, fourth floor auditorium, 101 W. 10th Ave., Eugene
The college is working with community and elected officials and other stakeholders to ensure community resiliency, said Brian Kelly, Lane’s vice president of College Services.
“As our community reinvents itself to respond to economic and environmental challenges, Lane Community College will be at the center of those conversations," Kelly said. "We often see economic and environmental factors impacting our students. It is vital that we convene and lead these conversations."
Lane recognizes the connection between sustainable practices and the college’s mission to serve students, said Luis Maggiori, Lane’s coordinator of the Institute for Sustainable Practices.
“We understand and value the importance of integrating sustainability best practices with effective resource allocation to continuously support student success,” Maggiori said.
Both panels include city and college representatives to discuss planning efforts and community involvement opportunities. The evening session also includes representation from active organizations, such as BRING and 350.org; and Lane County Public Health.
Upcoming events in the series will explore advocacy, sustainability efforts, food insecurity and resilience.
The events are free and open to the public with the support of the LCC Foundation’s Roberta Konnie Endowment Fund. The series is a collaborative effort of the college’s Peace Center, Institute for Sustainable Practices, Science and Health Education Divisions and the Lane Speaker Series.
