EUGENE, Ore.– The Lane Community College Balinese Dance group Tirta Tari will perform for the eighth consecutive year at the Asian Celebration on Saturday, February 16 at 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday, February 17 at 11:30 a.m., at the Lane County Fairgrounds mainstage.
On Saturday at 5:00 p.m., Bonnie Simoa will perform a section of the Gambuh. The Gambuh, a 400-year-old sacred dance, is the oldest form of traditional dance-drama on Bali. The Gambuh tells the story of the Prince Manji. It is several episodes long, and Bonnie will perform the condong or “attendant” character.
On Sunday at 11:30 a.m., Tirta Tari will perform the Rejang Sutri, a beautiful and hypnotic offering dance to live gamelan with Gamelan Sari Pandhawa, a Eugene performing ensemble. Adorned in white and gold costumes, the dancers perform a mesmerizing ritual to the gods.
Both the Gambuh and the Rejang were recently granted Intangible Cultural Heritage status by UNESCO, the United Nations Education, Science, and Culture Organization, which serves to protect, honor and preserve cultural entities. Artistic director and lead dance faculty Bonnie Simoa studies, dances, and performs regularly in Bali, and emparts the Balinese dance style to her students with impressive detail and accuracy. Tirta Tari is a favorite at the Asian Celebration. Experience a taste of Bali, in Eugene!Find out more information about the Asian Celebration.
