IRS Form 1098-T
An IRS Form 1098-T (1098-T) is used by educational institutions to report information about their US resident students to the IRS. As an eligible educational institution, Lane Community College (LCC) reports certain enrollment and identifying information about US resident students who attend during the tax year. Included in the 1098-T are payments, grants and scholarships that applied to qualified charges. LCC is not required to provide 1098-T forms to students who are non-resident aliens for tax purposes. If you plan to claim an educational tax credit, your social security number is required.
How to find and print your 1098-T
If there are QTRE expenses paid for the 2023 calendar year, students can access the 1098-T through ExpressLane. Select the “myFinances” tab, then “Student Account/Bursar Menu”, then “Tax Information/1098T” enter “2023” in the blank box, and select “Submit” to view and print the published form. The form will NOT be mailed.
If you did not provide LCC with your SSN or do not have a current address, LCC is unable to report your information to the IRS and publish the form.
If you do not have a 1098-T because we do not have your current address, you may update your mailing address through ExpressLane by following these steps.
If you do not have a 1098-T because the College does not have your Social Security Number, please complete and submit this form by March 17, 2024. Please contact Enrollment Services if you need assistance updating your social security number or address.
Once you have updated your address or SSN, please email bursar@lanecc.edu with “Update 1098-T” in the subject to request that we update and publish your 1098T.
If you are not eligible to receive a 1098-T for any particular tax year you will not see one produced in ExpressLane.
To see if you qualify for the tax credit see IRS Pub. 970 and contact your tax advisor. Lane Community College cannot answer questions or provide tax advice.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
LCC will send the electronic form to the student accounts in ExpressLane by January 31, 2024.
Lane Community College (LCC) is not required to furnish a 1098-T for the following students:
- Students who take classes where no academic credit is offered even if the student is otherwise enrolled in a degree program;
- Students who are nonresidents for income tax purposes (unless requested by the student); and
- Students for whom LCC does not maintain separate financial account information and whose qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE) are covered by a formal billing arrangement between the College and either the student's employer or a governmental entity, such as the Department of Veteran Affairs or the Department of Defense.
Some of the most common reasons for not receiving a 1098-T are:
- LCC does not have the student social security number,
- LCC does not have a valid address for the student,
- The student was not enrolled in qualifying courses
Box 1 will NOT equal to or sum to the charges paid for calendar year 2023 because some charges are not considered qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE) as defined by the Internal Revenue Service.
