Remember, an Evening of Dance to run February 27-29 at LCC

EUGENE, Ore. – The Lane Community College Dance program is excited to present the work of dance faculty from LCC, the University of Oregon and Western Oregon University, as well as alumni and special guest artists in Remember, an Evening of Dance, February 27-29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ragozzino Performance Hall, LCC main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene. 

Remember is an evening of collaborative dance theatre work that explores the powerful and often elusive process of memory, remembering, and forgetting. From memory loss, to the trauma of domestic violence, to the luminous quality of dreams, this dance piece touches the universal heart of memory expressed through dance, text, song, and theatre. Audience members will contribute to the performance piece and there will be a Q & A period following each performance. 

Lane Dance Company is featured throughout Remember. Artistic Director Bonnie Simoa’s work with the company springs from memories revealed in glimpses of her father, the final conversations with her mother, ongoing memory recall rehashes with siblings, and nostalgic dream-like moments with friends and lovers. Along with creative contributions from the company, these memories were mined and are revealed through script, song, movement, and action. UO’s Christian Cherry contributed music ideas, and his 8-year old daughter Talia dances the final scene with actor Kenny Jones. 

Sarah M. Nemecek has crafted several sections for the work that investigate nuances of memory. In a large ensemble piece It Washed Over and Through Me, the Lane Dance Company explores when a memory completely takes you off guard and sends you back in time to a specific moment. Rules I Never Knew, a trio for three male dancers, is based on conversations about the unstated rules of growing up as boys. In the aerial duet Für Alina, conflict and care intersect, while dancers suspend in connection. 

Accidents Happen is a new collaboration between choreographer Sarah Ebert, spoken word artist Roxy Allen, and dancers from the Eugene Ballet Youth. Working from the premise that “we remember what we feel,” the artists use the relationship between text and movement as a way to explore strength, support, and the power of softness — even within a traumatic context such as intimate partner violence.

Jana Meszaros' new work Dolores Gonzalez is a visual representation of the distinct and somehow obtuse concepts that orbit around the topics of memory and loss. In this piece, dancers work to convey ideas of care giving and receiving, and isolation and connection. It explores what it means to know one another, but not share the same reality, and to find togetherness even when we cannot find understanding. 

Melecio Estrella’s work You’ll Never Be Erased was created during his week-long residency with the Lane Dance Company. In this choreographic work, Estrella illuminates and intensifies moments of remembering with both kinetic and sensual movement. The original song of the same title, created collaboratively with the cast, has a beauty that leaves you breathless. 

Tickets are available at the door by donation, and all students are admitted free.
