Card-making workshop 12-2 p.m., lecture and reception 5-7 p.m.
EUGENE, Ore.— In honor of the Lunar New Year, pop-up book artist and photographer Colette Fu of Philadelphia will visit Lane Community College for two events on Monday, February 12. Fu is an award-winning artist and teacher who will lead a card-making workshop and give an artist talk while at Lane. Examples of her exquisite work are now on display on main campus in the Center Building Haugland Commons through winter term.
During many research trips over two decades, Fu documented the ethnic diversity of China while collecting local stories, legends and folktales. Her pop-up books on display at Lane are from the series "We are Tiger Dragon People," which explores these subjects.
An expert paper engineer, Fu’s pop-up books are marvels of cutting and folding. They are energetic, beautiful objects, with explosive compositions that celebrate the sounds, smells, and textures of her subject matter. Amazingly, Fu’s pop-up books fold back into thin board and cloth covers just like any other unassuming book on your shelf.
Fu completed a master of fine arts degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology and has since exhibited extensively in the United States. Her artworks are in the collections of the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and others. She has won several awards for her artwork including a Fulbright Research Fellowship.
Fu will conduct a Lunar New Year card-making workshop on Monday, Feb. 12 from 12-2 p.m. in Classroom 229 inside the Library in the Center Building and an artist talk and reception from 5-7 p.m., in the Haugland Commons in the Center Building, LCC main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene. Both events are free and open to the public. Workshop seating is limited; no supplies are necessary.
