Two-session course will be held Feb. 28 and March 6
EUGENE, Ore.–Lane Community College Public Safety will offer a two-session course in Veterans Mental Health First Aid on Friday, February 28 and Friday, March 6, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. each day, in Building 2, Room 213 on Lane main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene. Enrollment is free and open to the public but limited to 25 participants.
The course will be taught by LCC Public Safety Officer Stany Munaku. He is certified by Mental Health First Aid USA, a national program founded in 2001. He also is a veteran, deployed to Iraq from 2005-2009 as a private contractor trained in explosives detection and dog handling. He later served six years in the Army National Guard as an infantryman, and was deployed to Afghanistan from 2014-2015. Munaku aspires to help fellow veterans.
Veterans Mental Health First Aid teaches participants how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance abuse in veterans. Participants will learn how to provide initial help to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or who is experiencing a crisis. The course explores the different kinds of mental disorders, injuries, and how to apply deescalation tactics for someone experiencing suicidal ideation. Participants will learn how to talk to someone in a crisis, how to refer people for appropriate professional help, and how to help destigmatize mental disorders.
