On Saturday, Bonnie Simoa, Jessica Ealy, and Kristin Currier will perform the 200-year old Legong Keraton Playon. The Legong, rarely performed even in Bali due to its complexity and length, reflects the movement of nature, and is described in Bali as “the epitome of femininity and grace.” Eight dancers will perform the sacred offering dance, the Rejang Dewa. Adorned in white and gold costumes, the dancers perform a mesmerizing ritual to the gods.
On Sunday, Tirta Tari will perform the Rejang Sutri, a spare and hypnotic sacred offering dance to live gamelan with Gamelan Sari Pandhawa. Both the Legong and the Rejang were recently granted “Intangible Cultural Heritage” by UNESCO, the United Nations Education, Science, and Culture Organization, which serves to protect, honor and preserve cultural entities.
Artistic director and LCC Lead dance faculty Bonnie Simoa studies, dances, and performs regularly in Bali, and imparts the Balinese dance style to her students with impressive detail and accuracy. “Tirta Tari is a favorite at the Asian Celebration,” she says. “Join us for these mesmerizing dance events!”
