EUGENE, OR – The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present two new exhibitions opening November 14 and continuing until December 7.

“Diverse Journeys Through Art” features the work of local artists Karen Myers, Christine Paige and Laree Morgenstern. All three women have a long history of art-making and strong connections to the Lane Community College Art Department.

Group Statement: “This exhibition is a gathering of 3 artists coming together from very different directions, joined by our love of art and the joy of creating it. For all of us, art is a connection to the world, nature, and the societies that they encompass. Through our art, we express emotions and hope to engender reactions as we explore life in different mediums.”

There will be a reception for the artists of “Diverse Journeys Through Art” on Wednesday, November 30 from 4:30-6 p.m. in the gallery.

“Two-person Exhibition” features the work of local artists and Lane Community College art faculty Jan Halvorsen and Andrea Ciaston. Halvorsen and Ciaston teach in the Department of Art and Applied Design, working in the Media Arts and Fine Arts areas respectively.

Jan Halvorsen Artist Statement: A portrait is a conversation between me, my subject, and the work itself. I’m incredibly lucky to have good friends who agree to sit for me. We spend a lot of time together, sharing stories. We often talk about our families, where we come from, how we came to be here… The name of this show (from a haiku by Issa) expresses my sincere curiosity about the lives of my friends and their willingness to talk about themselves. I work on wood panels that I prepare with a surface that is deliberately irregular. The unpredictability of that surface and the surprises encountered there appeal to me. I do start with a clear idea for my composition, but much of what happens after that is influenced by the surface, the media, and of course… the conversations.

Andrea Ciaston Artist Statement: (Opens with quote: Sweet Brother / If I cannot sleep / My eyes are flowers for your grave - T. Merton, “The Seven Storey Mountain.”) I explore the intersection of minimal imagery, materials, and emotion in my artistic practice. This work is the third in a seasonal cycle; evocative of the days of the dead. The title is an excerpt from a letter written by Catholic Priest T. Merton, upon learning his brother was killed in World War II. This work is my visual metaphor for the emotions evoked in this letter and by this time of year.

There will be an artist Q&A for “Two-person Exhibition” on Thursday, November 17 at 4:00 p.m. in the gallery, with a reception immediately following.

The two galleries are located in building 11 on main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene. There is no charge for admission to either exhibition.
