EUGENE, Ore. — The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present two outstanding exhibitions in January.
“Body Language” features the works of Minneapolis based fiber artist Erica Spitzer Rasmussen. “Photos from the Imperfect World” features the works of Oakland, California photographer Ed Aust. Both shows open January 9 and run through February 9.
Rasmussen is a nationally and internationally acclaimed artist specializing in fiber-based sculpture and artist books often of a garment base. Her work is renowned for its detail and beauty as well as its hard hitting messages through the use of metaphor. On her website she writes, “I use clothing as subject matter because it allows me a ground on which to investigate identity and corporeality … My garments are metaphors."
In his statement, Aust writes, “I’m fascinated by the photograph’s persuasive power, calling us to pay attention to what we would normally overlook. A good photograph can make the familiar strange and the strange familiar. It can infuse the mundane with mystery or oddness, and show us that the world in which we exist is fraught with both peculiarity and holy significance. All of the photos in this exhibition were taken within the past two years and consist of people and cultural artifacts I’ve encountered on my intentional photo walks.” There will be a lecture with Aust on Thursday, January 19 at 3 p.m. in the gallery with a reception immediately following.
The gallery is located in building 11 on LCC main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue. There is no charge for admission. The Art and Applied Design Department phone number is (541) 463-541ar9.
