The public radio station has been winning awards since 1997
EUGENE, Ore.— KLCC public radio has won four national awards for excellence in broadcast news including its first national Edward R. Murrow Award.
The Murrow Awards are presented by the Radio Television Digital News Association. KLCC won the national award for Excellence in Writing in the Small Market Radio division for a collection of three stories by reporter Brian Bull. The stories covered Eugene’s March for Our Lives event, a Eugene cash-to-smash business called Demolition Zone, and how Bend, Oregon, became home to the last Blockbuster Video store in America. KLCC also won three regional awards from RTDNA, for Overall Excellence, Excellence in Writing, and Newscast. The awards were announced June 18 and will be presented at the association’s gala on Oct. 14 in New York City.
In addition, KLCC won three national awards from the Public Media Journalists Association (formerly Public Radio News Directors Inc.) at its annual conference June 12-15 in Washington DC. KLCC won first place for Best Soft Feature for reporter Tiffany Eckert’s story on a boy getting prosthetic arms made on a 3-D printer, first place for Best Use of Sound for reporter Alec Cowan’s story on freshwater mussels and river health, and second place for Best Newscast by reporter Love Cross.
The awards are among many from the Radio Television Digital News Association, Native American Journalists Association, Oregon Associated Press Broadcasters Association, Public Radio News Directors Inc., and the Society of Professional Journalists.
