Reception, Thursday, April 5, 2 p.m., Building 10 lobby
EUGENE, Ore. – A biennial exhibit, “Human Rights, Social Justice & Environment,” will be shown at Lane Community College from March 26 through April 13 in the Building 10 lobby on main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene. A reception and short talk by the LCC Arts Dean Richard Lubben will be held on Thursday, April 5, at 2 p.m., in the Building 10 lobby.
The inaugural exhibit took place in 2006 in McAllen, Texas, as a collaboration between local artists and the Women's Studies Committee's conference at South Texas College. The conference and artwork addressed the topic of women in war and provided an opportunity for scholars, artists, students and the community to examine the topic from various points of view and media. In the following year the conference and art exhibition focused on sex trafficking, then human trafficking in 2008. In 2010, exhibit coordinators made the decision to broaden the exhibit topic to "human rights" in order to be more inclusive, and with a goal of advocating for change and discussion regarding issues relating to human rights.
The purpose of this exhibit is to serve as an educational event, as well as providing a creative outlet for artists to address global and regional human rights, social justice and environmental issues. From 2006-2015 the juried annual exhibit was based at South Texas College; however, the exhibition or permanent collection has also traveled for exhibits to the University of Texas Pan American, Texas Tech University, the International Museum of Art and Science, the University of Ottawa, Canada, the Universidad de Monterrey, and the Progreso Art Gallery, Mexico. The last annual exhibit took place in spring 2015 and coincided with the Human Trafficking/Labor Conference that was held at South Texas College.
Statement from LCC Arts Dean, Richard Lubben—
“Through the exhibit’s conceptually and aesthetically unique artwork I hope viewers will connect to the artwork on an emotional and personal level, and open both internal and external dialogues to promote equality, respect and dignity for all humans. To help make this connection with viewers, and to see the subject through the artist’s eyes, each artist will provide a brief statement giving background on the their work, the subject, and why it is important to them. The artists for the 2018 exhibit were chosen from previous juried exhibits held in Texas, Mexico and Canada, as well as several LCC art instructors currently working in human rights and social justice themes.”
