EUGENE, Ore. - Leo Tolstoy and Mahatma Gandhi never met, but they corresponded during the last year of Tolstoy’s life. Visiting Fulbright scholar Galina Evtushenko of Russia has made a film of their exchange, “Leo Tolstoy and Mahatma Gandhi: A Double Portrait in the Interior of the Age.” The film will be screened at the Lane Community College Longhouse with Evtushenko present on Wednesday, May 16 at 2 p.m. This is a free public event.
The correspondence between the famous Russian writer and the iconic Indian political leader examined crucial philosophical, religious and political issues facing humanity in the 20th and 21st Centuries. The film shows that although Russia and India were separated by vast distances, the writing and examples of Tolstoy and Gandhi prove that the peoples of two great nations can be united through spirituality.
The screening is a collaboration of the Lane Community College divisions of Social Science and Languages, Literature and Communication (LLC); and the University of Oregon-UNESCO Crossings Institute.
