EUGENE, Ore. - Lane Community College, the first community college in the nation to become an affiliated partner in the GLOBE program, will hold workshops for educators in celebration of Earth Science Week, October 8-14. LCC Science Division Dean Dr. Paul Ruscher, a GLOBE Master Trainer and Fellow of the American Meteorological Society, will demonstrate materials from GLOBE to area teachers in a series of free workshops at LCC Cottage Grove Center, main campus in Eugene, and LCC at Florence. The week caps off with a series of short workshops at the Oregon Science Teacher's Association annual meeting at PCC Sylvania in Portland. The workshops will demonstrate how teachers can bring Earth and environmental science material into their classroom in support of Oregon's adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards, as the new Oregon Science Standards.
All educators at the K-12, college, or community level are welcome to attend any or all of these workshops, and learn how to incorporate their own students' observations into comprehensive environmental analysis of their own areas, or explore the vast array of geoscience data available for the oceans, soils, rivers, and atmosphere. Climate is a particular focus of the GLOBE program, and it facilitates study of climate change and its relationship to the living environment.
The workshops are intended for practicing teachers, educators in informal settings such as natural resource areas, and pre-service teachers. GLOBE provides materials in support of mathematics, social science, and language study using science concepts. “It's not just for science teachers,” says Ruscher. The workshops provide an introduction to GLOBE and online follow-up opportunities and collaborations. Advance registration is requested.
