EUGENE, Ore. — Lane Community College is excited to announce a significant update to one of its Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree programs in the tech field. The degree, previously known as “Programming,” has been renamed “Software Development” to better align with the evolving needs and expectations of the software development industry. This change reflects the college's commitment to providing students with the most relevant and up-to-date education in software development, preparing them for successful careers in this rapidly advancing field.
According to faculty member Brian Bird from Lane’s Computer Information Technology Department, "The decision to rename our AAS in Programming to Software Development comes as a natural progression in response to the ever-changing demands of the industry. We believe this new name better reflects the skills and expertise our graduates possess, and it aligns with the job titles they pursue upon entering the workforce."
Bird further added, "By embracing this name change, we are ensuring that our program remains at the forefront of industry trends and that our graduates are well-prepared for the dynamic and rewarding field of software development. We are proud to provide our students with a comprehensive curriculum that equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this competitive industry."
Software developers play a crucial role in today's technology-driven society. They are responsible for creating a wide range of computer software, including database systems, desktop applications, mobile apps, web apps, and games. In addition to software creation, developers also excel in upgrading existing software by adding new features, debugging and testing code, and solving complex technical problems through their creativity, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Lane Community College's Software Development program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this dynamic industry. The curriculum includes comprehensive instruction in coding using multiple computer languages, hands-on software projects to enhance problem-solving abilities, and the utilization of frameworks and libraries to build games, desktop, mobile, and web applications. Furthermore, students gain invaluable experience by working in teams, employing current practices and methodologies to solve real-world business problems and develop software solutions for actual clients.
In addition to the AAS degree, Lane Community College offers specialized certificates to further enhance students' expertise and employability. The certificates include Database Design and Programming, Mobile App Development, and Front-End Web Development, allowing individuals to focus on specific areas of interest and expertise.
