EUGENE, Ore. — Lane Community College welcomes Fulbright Scholar Dr. Antonija Petričušić for a series of classroom and student visits as well as a lecture April 5. The lecture, hosted by Lane Community College and co-sponsored by University of Oregon's Global Studies Institute, Legal Studies Program, and Global Studies Department, is entitled “Women's Rights and International Rights in a Global Context.” The lecture that is free and open to the public will be held April 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Building 19, Room 226, on LCC's main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave., in Eugene.
“Lane Community College is excited to explore the intersection of women's rights and international law with Fulbright Scholar Dr. Antonija Petričušić, as she shares her expertise and experiences in a global context," said Lane Community College Dean of Social Sciences Philip R. Martinez.
Petričušić is an associate professor of sociology and law at the University of Zagreb. She is currently a Fulbright scholar at the University of Minnesota investigating the impacts of conservative legal mobilization on women’s rights in Croatia and the Balkans more broadly. She has researched and lectured extensively on a range of human rights topics in the U.S. and Europe. For her significant contribution to gender equality and social justice in Croatia in 2020 she was awarded the Fierce Women Award. Her main scientific interests include rights of national minorities, ethno-religious nationalism, diversity management, gender equality, women's rights and women empowerment.
She will be accompanied by a colleague and collaborator, Dr. Emina Buzinkic. A human rights scholar and activist, Buzinkic has worked in post-conflict peacebuilding and refugee support organizations for more than 20 years. She recently completed her PhD at the University of Minnesota (Dissertation entitled “School aftershocks: Perpetual displacements of refugee youth amid multiple pandemics and social borders”) and is currently teaching at UM while starting a post-doc at the Institute of Development and International Relations in Zagreb.
“This is an incredible opportunity for all of us to learn from these distinguished scholars, and gain a deeper understanding of global human rights issues,” said Lane Community College President Stephanie Bulger. “We hope that this lecture will encourage meaningful discussions and inspire action towards creating a more just and equitable world for all."
