EUGENE, Ore. – Lane Community College has signed a partnership agreement with the U.S. Embassy of Togo and the Government of Togo for Togolese students to study aviation maintenance at LCC. The first two students, Kodjovi Amedjrovi and Francisca Nouve, enrolled this spring.
Early last year, a member of the Ministry of Higher Education in Togo attended a presentation about LCC. They were impressed by Lane’s strong academic programs, student support, housing, and location. The Aviation Maintenance Technician Program especially caught their interest. Togo wants to bolster its local workforce skills in the aviation sector and strengthen its local ASKY Airlines, to reduce reliance on outside expertise, says LCC Associate Director of International Recruitment Carla Andersen. Representatives from Togo and LCC worked together over the past year and signed a memorandum of understanding this spring. The students’ expenses are primarily funded by scholarships provided by the Togolese government, the U.S. Embassy in Togo, with some scholarship support from LCC.
Over the past few years, Lane has developed other international partnerships that allow LCC transfer students to study abroad. These include 2+1 programs where students can earn a bachelor’s degree in just three years in France. LCC currently has other global partnerships with the Rennes School of Business in France, Otago Polytechnic in New Zealand, University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia as well as University of Wales Trinity Saint David and York St John University in the UK.
International programs provide students with an understanding and appreciation of global cultures, says Andersen, which helps them succeed in an increasingly diverse and complex marketplace. International programs also support Lane’s core values of diversity and inclusion.
