Special Services Teams

Our Public Safety Department has several special teams dedicated to ensuring a safe learning environment at Lane Community College.

Hazmat Team

LCC Hazmat Team Logo

The mission of the Lane Community College HAZMAT Response Team is to protect life, property, and the environment by isolating, containing and mitigating hazardous materials incidents; responding to CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives) emergencies and minimizing the dangers associated with them.

One of LCC's core values is a safe learning environment. Everyone in the college is a stakeholder as a Hazmat situation can affect anyone.

College Hazmat team personnel are specially trained to handle various Hazmat situations that include materials that are radioactive, flammable, explosive, corrosive, oxidizing, asphyxiating, biohazardous, toxic, pathogenic, or allergenic.

Bike Team

The LCC Public Safety Bicycle patrol includes a team of eight officers who patrol campus generally between April and October. This unique patrol enables officers to cover more ground and be more visible on campus. Our Bike Team also provides services to major events on campus, such as commencement, to provide support to the community visiting campus.

Dispatchers

Public Safety's Dispatching Unit receives emergency calls from the public requesting: law enforcement, fire, medical, or other emergency services. Other important duties of this unit entail the monitoring of direct emergency alarms and maintaining contact with all units on assignment as well as the status and location of Public Safety Officers.

Non-emergency calls are also received and handled accordingly. Dispatchers also help non-emergency callers with several services, such as: loaning battery chargers, managing lost and found, and helping employees access building access cards, and manage the parking appeals process for campus citations.

Background Investigators

The Background Investigation Unit is responsible for the comprehensive investigation and clearance of new candidates for employment as dispatchers, cadets, and officers in Public Safety. Each new candidate is assigned a specific background investigator. This specialist, interviews candidates, obtains a completed questionnaire and then begins a lengthy process of talking to acquaintances, employers, relatives, other law enforcement agencies, and military personnel (when applicable) to gain a full understanding of the candidate's background. A full criminal history check is conducted and fingerprint records are obtained. The fingerprint records are sent to the Oregon State Police and the FBI. Investigators prepare comprehensive reports and assessments on suitability for employment with LCC Public Safety.

Emergency Medical Services

LCC's Public Safety Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team includes patrol officers who have undergone emergency medical training and have passed both Oregon and national accreditation as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) or Emergency Medical Responder (EMR).

All public safety officers are trained in CPR and first aid. The EMS team personnel are a select group with additional training in emergency medical response that includes the authority to administer lifesaving Oxygen (O2), Epinephrine, and some other drugs depending on the officer's scope of training. They are also trained to identify life-threatening conditions and respond appropriately. They are authorized to administer emergency airway management, spine injury protection, and patient stabilization.

Through an agreement with the LCC Student Health Clinic, the EMS team responds to medical-related calls on campus in advance of and support of local health care providers, responding fire and ambulance units, assessing and stabilizing as needed prior to their arrival. The Public Safety EMS team has EMT skill-specific medical bags that are restricted to certified EMTs.
