Now entering its second year, Reading Together: Learning, Caring, and Community at Lane, is an exciting year long, campus-wide project centered around something absolutely basic to education: READING. Through the mechanism of two closely linked books, we explore issues connected with our college’s core values: Learning, Diversity, Innovation, Collaboration and Partnership, Integrity, and Accessibility.

Reading Together sponsors a year of activities centered around these books, including course involvement, performing arts productions, art exhibits, lectures, guest speakers, author visits, forums, films, student presentations, service projects, and more. Reading Together reaches across traditional borders—borders between campus employee and student groups; borders between disciplines; borders between different ways of learning, different life experiences, different areas of interest.

For 2004-05, Reading Together has chosen:

Multi-cultural historian Ronald Takaki’s book, A Larger Memory: a History of our Diversity with Voices,
	and novelist Sandra Cisneros’ novel, The House on Mango Street.

Cisneros and Takaki both explore the multiple voices which have collaborated to create the history and culture of the country we know of as America. A major event of the year will be Dr. Takaki's visit to the Lane Campus and the Eugene community during the third week of April.
