EUGENE, Ore. — The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present ”Breath and Time,” an exhibition featuring the works of regional artist Sarah Grew. The show opens Monday, Oct. 30. An artist’s lecture and reception will be held Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 3:00 p.m. in the gallery.

Artist Statement: “My palimpsestic art examines concepts of time and modes of expressing temporality. In this body of work, I have sifted through art history to find the many ways the passage of time is expressed visually, and to combine these traces into abstract paintings using a range of materials and techniques. So far I have focused on six modes of temporal expression:

  • Stillness, or deep time, the horizon of sight and time, limits/limitlessness light, reflection, refraction, both as a captured static element and as an active part of the metal paintings.
  • Motion, creating a sense of movement in the stillness of paint. Repetition/punctuation, or counting moments on a timeline, in my work I use the EKG.
  • Memory, the suggestion of landscape symbolized by the horizontal line. The incorporation of photography, actual memory or fabrication. Degradation of Materials, purposely using materials that will change in time, creating art that appears static but speaks to time.

“In keeping with my interest in temporal concepts I work in a range of materials and media that cover a wide assortment visual art technologies. Currently, I am working mostly in three media; painting, drawing, and photography, including digital technology, black and white darkroom and alternative process printing (cyanotype, Van Dyke brown-type, palladium). I am experimenting with paintings on steel where I use the reflective surface to create constantly changing paintings in what is considered a static medium. Playing with time, light and motion as well as stretching our notions of how paintings behave. In the next phase of my work I want to layer visual technologies form different eras to create works incorporating circular time frames leading to suggestions of an alternative visual future and possibly expanding my work to incorporate sound.”
