September 2002 Highlights

LARRY ROMINE was appointed to the zone 5 position on the Board of Education at a special telephone meeting on September 6. Romine is a prior Lane board member and administrator.

A LONG HOUSE BLESSING was held September 11, sponsored by the Lane Community College Foundation and the Native American Student Association. Ceremonies were conducted at the site where the long house will be built, just north of the tennis courts and overlooking the track in the northwest corner of main campus.

A SEPTEMBER 11 REMEMBRANCE was held at noon at Bristow Square.

THE FLORENCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE met with the Board of Education for a work session at the board's September 11 meeting in Florence. The conversation was reported as positive and productive.

RECOGNITION AWARDS celebrated at in-service the week of September 16 included Faculty Recognition Awards, first presented at graduation, to Fred Beisse, Ellen Cantor, Linda Gonzalves, Kathleen Shull, Sue Thompson, Suzanne Williams, and Bill Del Gaudio. Joan Aschim was named classified employee of the year. Eldon G. Schafer Innovation Grants went to Jerry Hall for the American Indian Language Project; to Barbara DeFilippo for leadership training for student leaders; to David Shellabarger for developmental math modules; and to Karen Dickey for a Foundation scholarship booklet. Schafer Pat-On-The-Back Awards went to Lee Imonen for his site-specific sculpture class; to Barbara Thorson, Shirlee Ford, Lynne Phillips, Tasha Drake, and Donna Zmolek for a peer-to-peer budgeting work group; to Vicky Doughty, Doug Smyth, Tim Blood, Corinne Meehan, Rich Freund, Deb Hupcey, Shirlee Ford, Dan Hodges, and Rodney Brown for computerized intake for Counseling; and to Devon Budz, Juan Cuadros, Roma Cusimano, Armand Gagnon, Elizabeth Hall, Matthew Luke, Sylvie Matalon-Florendo, Bojana Stefanovska and Gloria Zabala for the Spanish Program learning strategies project. The Spanish project also won the League for Innovation's Innovation of the Year award at Lane.

THE FALL ALL-STAFF MEETING was held September 17. Board of Education Chair Roger Hall and President Mary Spilde addressed employees. In-service activities continued throughout the week.

THE ACCREDITATION SELF-STUDY kicked off with participatory discussion at the all-staff meeting on September 17. In-service events continued throughout the week. An accreditation visit is set for 2004.

CONCLUSION OF THE FIFTH SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE SESSION on September 18 left Lane facing another $3.2 million funding reduction for the current year, unless voters pass a three-year income tax surcharge on January 28, which would reduce the funding cut. Lane must plan various options.

THE MAYOR'S ART SHOW opened at the Eugene Celebration on September 20 and includes work by three Lane staff, Satoko Motouji and Mary Ann Plunkett of Art and Applied Design, and Daniel Moret of Marketing and Public Relations. An artists' reception that evening was emceed by Jenny Newtson of KLCC and included an address by Miriam Jordan of Instruction and Student Services.

CLASSES BEGAN Monday, September 23.

THE LIBRARY opened a new electronic classroom for the start of classes. The classroom features 24 computer workstations for hands-on instruction in the use of online resources. When not in use for library instruction, the classroom serves as an open Internet lab. Last year, the library provided instruction in 179 classes (4,475 students).

STUDENT AMBASSADORS for 2002/03 were introduced by the High School/Community Relations office in the September 26 Daily. Ambassadors assist with student recruitment activities, campus tours, and high school and community outreach. Wendell Freeman is studying for a degree in political science and a future in law. He is past president of Lane's Queer Straight Alliance and is a current member of the college Diversity Team, a board member of Oregon Statewide Students for Equal Rights Alliance, and participates on the Lane County Human Rights Advisory Committee. Traci Treadwell is pursuing a degree in political science and ethnic studies and is headed for law school. She is a mother of two, active in student government, co-chair for Oregon Students of Color Coalition, ands serves as treasurer of Lane's Black Student Union.
