January 2003 Highlights

DENNIS SHINE, Lane Community College Board of Education member since 2001, received the Human Rights Leadership Award from the Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect at the Springfield Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on January 20.

PRESIDENT MARY SPILDE presented at the Eugene City Club on January 24. She described the mission and achievements of the college and provided a budget update.

GREG EVANS, special projects coordinator at Lane, received the 2003 Education Award from the Oregon Assembly for Black Affairs at the assembly's leadership conference in Salem on January 25. The award recognized his work in founding and expanding the Rites of Passage Summer Academy which helps African American, Native American, Asian American, and Latino/Latina youth prepare for college and life.

LEAGUE FOR INNOVATION representatives visited Lane January 27 and 28 to evaluate Lane's application for reappointment as a board member college. Mark Milliron, president and CEO of the League, League Board Chair Dr. Peter Boyse, president of Delta College, and Dr. Henry Shannon, chancellor of St. Louis Community College, met with faculty, staff and some Lane Board of Education members.

VOTERS DEFEATED MEASURE 28 in the January 28 election. Consequently, Lane will lose $3.1 million in funding this year. The shortfall will be addressed through $2.5 million in budget adjustments that have no direct impact on students. Adjustments include belt-tightening reductions such as delaying hirings and deferring equipment and facilities maintenance, as well as extra tuition revenue from summer term, savings from previous reductions, and increased use of contingency funds. In addition, students will pay a $2.50 tuition surcharge spring term only, and the college will cancel some sections of classes.

BUDGET PROJECTIONS for 2003/04 were updated and shared at an all-staff meeting on January 29. The projections reflected the state revenue forecasts and the governor's budget proposal. Estimates indicate a funding gap of between $5 million to $6 million depending on decisions at the state level.

EMPLOYEES PLEDGED $24,964 to the United Way campaign. The campaign officially concluded late fall but contributions continued to trickle in through January. Lane's Foundation organized the campaign.
