FirstSearch Databases for Lane Faculty How do you log on?
What is FirstSearch? FirstSearch is offered by OCLC, the oldest and largest bibliographic utility and information provider in the country. It is a suite of 29 separate databases covering a huge range of disciplines. What is covered? Taken as a whole, FirstSearch includes many millions of bibliographic and full-text records. The most famous database is WorldCat, which is a mega-library catalog - a cooperative database of bibliographic records contributed by 45,000 libraries, making it the world's largest, most complete, and most consulted library union catalog. It includes 54 million global information sources in all formats - books, full text, electronic books and journals, web-based articles, audio and video recordings, manuscripts, even a cuneiform tablet from Mesopotamia. Are full-text articles available? Why use FirstSearch? FirstSearch offers unparalleled access to specialized proprietary information in a wide range of fields. All the databases provide citation-level data, while a subset of 17 databases offer full-text access. By using WorldCat, you have access to millions of books and other materials potentially available through interlibrary loan. What is the cost? FirstSearch costs around 80c per search, and there are extra charges for full-text access to the information. The Library will absorb these charges for faculty. Contact? For further information, contact Don Macnaughtan, 463-5359 or macnaughtand@lanecc.edu. |
