LIB127: LIBRARY AND INFORMATION RESEARCH

Course Description
Learn how to use your library. This 3-credit, transfer course equips students with the skills needed to access information and carry out research using print and electronic resources. Students will learn Internet research, the library’s online catalog, basic reference sources, periodical online databases, research strategy, and bibliographic format.
This is a non-lecture, self-paced course with flexible scheduling, ideally suited to self-motivated students. The course develops research skills and confidence that can be directly applied to other college courses.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
(1) locate and effectively use the various resources and services of a library
(2) understand and effectively use the various resources of the World Wide Web for library research
(3) understand how to evaluate online information
(4) understand and effectively use an online library catalog
(5) understand and effectively use library classifications and subject headings
(6) understand and effectively use library subscription databases
(7) understand and effectively use library reference books
(8) understand and demonstrate basic principles of library research strategies
(9) prepare a bibliography according to bibliographic standards
Objectives will be assessed by completion of Units 1-5, the Unit Test, attendance at a bibliography clinic, and completion of the Final Research Project.

Unit 7: Final research project (in lieu of final exam)
