Cameron
“I want to be the nurse for someone who hasn’t ever received healthcare, or someone who thought that this level of care wasn’t available to them.” —Cameron
Cameron is a Nursing student at Lane Community College whose path to healthcare has been shaped by a commitment to caring for others during times of need. After putting his education on hold to support a loved on through a serious autoimmune illness, Cameron returned to school to pursue nursing with a deeper understanding of the challenges people face when navigating the healthcare system. His perspective was further transformed when he became a temporary guardian for three young family members, an experience that revealed the gaps within healthcare and social support systems while reinforcing the importance of advocacy, stability, and compassion. Through nursing, Cameron hopes to serve diverse and underserved communities, building trust with patients who may have faced barriers to care. Whether in emergency medicine, hospice care, or community health settings, he is driven by a desire to provide compassionate, equitable care to help ensure that every person feels seen, supported, and valued.
Chayton
“I’ve had people there for me when I’ve been at low points, and I want to give that back. Pay it forward, in a way.” —Chayton
Chayton is a Veteran and psychology student dual-enrolled at Lane Community College and Oregon State University, who discovered a path to higher education after nearly a decade of service in the Oregon National Guard. After spending years unsure if college was for him, Chayton found his footing at Lane, where he builds on his military leadership experience through the President’s Steering Leadership Circle, cooperative education, and an internship with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, where he co-facilitates a peer support group. Driven by the loss of fellow Veterans and his own experience with the power of support, Chayton plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology and continue to graduate school with the goal of becoming a licensed professional counselor with Veterans Affairs.

Elizabeth
“It just feels really awesome being at Lane, it’s a place I keep wanting to come back to. Everyone is so nice and caring, and there are always people that you are going to meet there.” —Elizabeth
Elizabeth is a second-year dental hygiene student, and the first person in her family to attend college. Growing up in Salem as the youngest of four siblings, Elizabeth learned early on the value of perseverance and education. After joining the cross-country team at Lane, she discovered a campus community where she felt welcomed, supported, and encouraged to pursue her goals. Scholarships have helped relieve financial stress, allowing her to focus on her demanding coursework and clinical training rather than balancing school with additional work hours. As a Latina, Elizabeth was inspired by a bilingual Latina orthodontist whose care helped transform her confidence as a teenager and showed her what was possible. Now, she hopes to use her own bilingual skills to improve access to dental care for Spanish-speaking families and create a more welcoming experience for patients navigating the healthcare system. As a dental hygienist, she hopes to serve underserved communities, support young patients, and help others build the same confidence that changed her own life.
