Telecourses
Telecourses include weekly video programs, required textbooks and assignments and periodic exams. Most telecourses require students to use email and the Internet. Each telecourse has an assigned instructor who serves as a personal contact, answers questions, evaluates examinations and assignments. Instructors are available for assistance by phone, email or in person. Students are usually expected to come to campus three to five times during the term for test-taking and discussion sessions. A $25 fee is charged for each telecourse.
How do I get started in my telecourse?
Telecourse students must log in to Moodle (http://classes.lanecc.edu) and enter the class website. Students who do not log in to Moodle before the end of the first week of classes may be administratively dropped from the course. If you don’t have access to a computer off campus, you can use a computer in Lane’s Library (2nd floor Center building) or in the Instructional Computing Lab (building 4, room 201) during their regular operating hours.
Do telecourses have an orientation session?
Telecourses have an optional orientation session during the first week of classes. All orientations are held on the main campus. Times and locations are listed on the web under each course listing. An orientation schedule is also posted about a month before the term begins. It is recommended that you attend the orientation session, especially if you have never taken a telecourse before. The orientations held in Building 19, room 257 are shown live on cable television and are videotaped and available for viewing in the Lane Library the following day.
How do I obtain the telecourse syllabus?
The course syllabus, complete with viewing schedules, testing and grading procedures, and tips for successfully completing the telecourse, will be distributed at the orientation session and will also be available in Moodle. Make sure you obtain the syllabus before proceeding with the telecourse. Some courses will also have handouts, discussion forums, and other materials available on Moodle.
How do I view the telecourse video programs?
Viewing options are listed for each course on the current term's Telecourse Offerings page. Not all courses have the same viewing options. Click on the Viewing Options link for an explanation of each option. Beginning the first week of each term, most telecourses can be viewed on Comcast channel 23 and Charter Communications channel 9. A viewing schedule is included in the syllabus. All telecourses can be viewed in the main campus library and at other listed locations. Copies of most telecourses are also available from the main campus library for one-week checkout at no charge. Some, but not all, telecourses are available for checkout on DVD. A photo ID is required to check materials out of the library. Telecourses that list option "B" are available via streaming video free of charge. Telecourses that list option "E" or "F" have videos that are available for rental on VHS, DVD, streaming video, or video download, depending on the course (not all options are available for all courses; fees apply).
How much time do I need to study for my telecourse?
Although the time viewing programs is limited, you must be willing to put in many additional hours. You are required to watch all the programs, read the textbook and study guide, and complete all required assignments and exams. This is not an easy way to earn credit; it is just a different way of doing it.
