Barbara Denny George, Ed.D. offers self-paced, online courses/adventures for children and adults, as well as classes for families and senior citizens.  These hobby, educational and family online courses give you a chance to work on a one to one basis at your own speed, on the dates and times of your choosing.  You will learn how to use the Internet for fun educational, family and hobby pursuits.  

Courses are $49 and have several links to explore regarding each activity with an average of 18 hours participation time. E-mail is available for questions and comments for participant and teacher interaction on a one-to-one basis.  Each course will be online for 30 days per session. The course is "up there" for 30 days for you to log into as much or as little as you desire according to your own personal schedule.

Winter term classes:

34096 American History, Jan 15-Feb 14

An online introduction to American History through exploration of selected sites on the Internet.  An investigation of American patriotism and the patriots who started it all. A review of American symbols and a look at historical documents and events virtual reality style.  Suggested for ages  12 and up.

Social studies turn the hands of time as you experiment with activities that help understand community, state, country, continent and planetary relationships.  Learn how to find your address on an Internet map, then broaden your map knowledge by playing games with states and capitals.  Figure out what to do when aliens travel through the solar system.  Have you ever heard of Pangaea?  All of this online and more As the Sundial turns... Suggested for ages 8 to 13.

A wonderful self-paced online course for Civil War enthusiasts, and those who want to learn more about the Civil War. Explore diaries, letters, newspapers. Reenact battles and follow up commentary.  Learn how to find your Civil War ancestors. Suggested for ages  14 to adult.

34091 Groundwork: Gardening 1, Feb 15-Mar 20

A course for new and old gardeners, individuals working to become a Master Gardener and those folks who are just plain interested.  The objective of this course is to provide a general appreciation and knowledge of the basics of gardening.  Before becoming a successful gardener, you should have some groundwork knowledge.  Course activities include beginning botany, soils and plant nutrition, insects and disease.  Recommended for adults.

An exploration of Ireland through the Internet.  The next best thing to traveling the Emerald Isle.  If you are planning a trip to Ireland, take this course before leaving.  Learn about famous places, Irish Saints and Legends, Irish Tales, Ballads, Songs and Irish Recipes.  Utilize the one-to-one personal instruction by a qualified instructor from the comfort of your own home.  Recommended for ages 8 to adult.

An online Experience with Science that is easy to understand, exploratory in nature and interesting too!  Some of the topics covered are: The Nervous System, Chemistry, Volcanoes, Tsunamis, Electricity and more.  Much about the science you were afraid to ask in a classroom setting you can enjoy one-on-one from the comforts of home.  Suggested for ages 12 to adult.

This online course deals with introductory science concepts and gives you a chance to do some experiments both on and off line.  Use sliced cheese to understand fractures.  What do cheeseburgers and science have in common?  Participate in online treasure hunts. Suggested for ages  9 to 14.

Learn how to find the unusual and miscellaneous on the Internet.  Suggested for ages 13 to adult.

After this online adventure you will not need to use any lifelines on your road to success. Equip yourself with a higher understanding of Algebra, Geometry, Trig and more. One day this information could be worth millions. Suggested for ages  12 and up.

In this online adventure we will take a look at the evolution of beaches and coral reefs and the animals related to those habitats. There are a lot of activities to explore so dive in and get your feet wet -- virtual reality style. Take advantage of one-on-one interaction with the instructor s. Suggested for ages 11 and up.

If the skies are cloudy all night where you live or if you enjoy looking and learning about the night skies, this is a fun online course for you. You don't have to worry about the weather or city lights. Just put on some comfortable clothes, log on to the course and enjoy stargazing. Suggested for ages 10 and up.

Learn what makes a volcano erupt and some of the most famous eruptions in history. See how a volcano affects you? Become aware of the beginning signs or eruptions and how to prepare for them? Now is the time to take your virtual tour and learn all about volcanoes!  Suggested for ages  11 and up.

Registration is easy!

1. First, register for your class at Lane:

  • If you already have a Lane Student ID number or “L” number, log on to ExpressLane, access Enrollment Services and follow the links to register for your class.
  • If you don’t have an ”L” number, call or visit the Continuing Education Department at (541) 463-5252, 1059 Willamette Street in Eugene.
  • Complete the Community Education Registration form and mail or fax it to the address or fax number provided on the form.
  • Come in person to the Lane Community College Downtown Center at 1059 Willamette Street in Eugene.
  • Call the Continuing Education office at (541) 463-5252.

2. Next, email your name and course registration number to ceonline@lanecc.edu to receive passwords for access to the class.
